Frequently asked questions about stress, adrenaline and cortisol

How long does a cortisol rise last after stress?

Cortisol peaks 20 to 40 minutes after the stress begins, then usually returns to its starting level 40 to 60 minutes after it ends (Dickerson, 2004).

Why does your heart race as soon as you feel stressed?

Because adrenaline acts almost immediately: it speeds up the heart, opens the airways and releases sugar into the blood. Cortisol takes over later, within 20 to 40 minutes (Dickerson, 2004).

How can you calm down quickly when you are stressed?

Breathing slowly, at around 6 breaths per minute (5 seconds in, 5 seconds out), helps the heart slow down and reduces felt stress within a few minutes (Zaccaro, 2018).

Does stress raise blood sugar?

Yes: adrenaline and then cortisol make the liver release sugar to give energy to the muscles. In a person without diabetes, the effect is short; in a person with diabetes, it can show up on the glucose meter.
