Frequently asked questions about alcohol in the blood and sleep
How long does alcohol stay in the blood?
The liver removes about 0.15 g/L of alcohol per hour, between 0.10 and 0.25 depending on the person (Jones, 2010). With a peak of 0.6 g/L, it therefore takes about 4 hours to get back to zero (our calculation).
Do coffee, a shower or exercise lower blood alcohol faster?
No: only time lowers blood alcohol, at the pace of the liver (Jones, 2010). Coffee can make you feel more awake, but the alcohol stays in the blood and reflexes stay slower.
How long after drinking does blood alcohol peak?
Usually 30 minutes to 1 hour after the last drink, on an empty stomach. In one study, the peak came after 36 minutes for a spirit with a mixer, 54 for wine and 62 for beer (Mitchell, 2014). A meal delays and lowers this peak.
Why do you wake up at night after drinking?
Alcohol makes you fall asleep faster and deepens the first half of the night. But once it has been cleared, the second half becomes restless: more frequent awakenings and less REM sleep (Ebrahim, 2013).
