Frequently asked questions about fasting for several days

How long do you have to fast before you burn fat?

Fat already supplies a good share of the energy after one night, then becomes the main fuel between 12 and 24 hours, when the liver's sugar store runs out. Ketone bodies rise clearly after 2 to 3 days and then feed a large part of the brain (Cahill, 2006).

Does fasting raise growth hormone?

Yes: on the 5th day of fasting, the amount of growth hormone released over 24 hours is about 3 times higher than on a normal day, with more frequent and higher peaks (Ho, 1988). It helps preserve muscle while fat is used as fuel.

Does fasting make you lose muscle?

A little, mostly in the first days, when part of the protein is used to make sugar. After that, ketone bodies take over for the brain and the body spares its protein more (Cahill, 2006).

How should you start eating again after a fast of several days?

Gently, with small meals for the first few days. After a long fast, a sudden return to sugars can make phosphorus and potassium drop in the blood: this is refeeding syndrome, rare in a healthy person but dangerous in a malnourished one (Mehanna, 2008).
