What happens in the muscle with a heavy or a light load?

Frequently asked questions about reps

How many reps should I do to build muscle?

Almost any load works, from about 5 to 30 reps per set, as long as the last reps are hard. Between 6 and 15 reps is often the most practical: the load stays manageable and the set does not last too long.

How many reps should I do to get stronger?

For maximal strength, heavy sets of 1 to 6 reps work best. The brain learns to switch on all the fibers at once for that exact movement, which light sets train less.

Should I go to failure on every set?

No. Stopping with 1 to 3 reps left in the tank keeps most of the muscle gain and is less tiring. Going to failure adds a little, mostly useful with light loads.

How many sets per week for one muscle?

About 10 sets or more per muscle per week build more muscle than fewer than 5 sets. Beginners need fewer sets; you then increase gradually, depending on recovery (a coach's advice, not a study result).

Are 1RM percentage charts reliable?

They give only a rough idea. At the same percentage, the number of reps changes with the exercise and the person: at 80% of 1RM, people do on average about 9 reps on the bench press and 13 on the leg press.
